Cake and Bread Baskets


A fine George II cake basket in the fully developed Rococo style by John Hugh Le Sage, London, 1748.  The body is pierced with fancy geometric designs and the bottom is engrved with a slightly later Coat of Arms.  It has a scroll and floral border with masks at the handle joins.  The scroll handle is engraved on the top flat portion.  The basket stands on four volute feet headed with masks.  The mark for the maker is rubbed, but readable.

A good George III cake basket made in London, 1786, by James Stamper. Typical oval form on a spreading foot pierced with pales, the sides pierced with pales and with a running floral bank at the top. Reeded loop handle. 13 5/8" long; 10 " high, weight about 19 ounces. There is no engraving other than the brightcutting in and around the piercing.

A superior cake basket by Burrage Davenport, London, 1781. This basket is 10 inches wide and 14 inches long. It is beautifully pierced and has six attached medallions, two each of Hercules and the Nemean lion, Aesclepius, and two unidentified possibly Hygea cleansing an infant. The basket is fully hallmarked, the handle has the lion passant mark only. It is engraved with a coat of arms in the center. Excellent condition.

An Old Sheffield Plate sweetmeat dish, English, circa 1790. This dish measures 61/2 by 4 1/4 inches. No breaks or losses in the piercing. Minor wear showing some copper to the highlights. Minor pitting in basket.
