A very fine Chinese racing trophy in the form of goblet by LC, circa 1868.  This racing trophy is of British Colonial interest.  The foot is embossed with bamboo sticks on a rocky ground.  The body of the cup is applied with Chinese battle scenes including men with rifles, and swords, with Chinese pagodas in the background. It stands 8 1/2 inches tall and weighs 17 ounces.  The shield is engraved "Amoy Races, 1868, won by  Mr. J. Patterson's Twilight, ridden by Mr. J. M. Pedder. "  The China Review of contemporary date contains the following description of the races at page 718.  "Then, once a year in January, the Chinese drill ground is converted into a Race Course, and three days are devoted to the Amoy Jockey Club meeting.  With eight races each day, the prizes to be won are necessarily of small value, but are non the less keenly competed for by the local sportsmen.  To those who are fond of ponies, the winter months' training for the races affords an excellent specific for moral, and physical health.  A young man who aspires to ride successfully must adopt healthy habits, and cannot burn the mdnight oil if he is due in the saddle at the first dawn of day for a training gallop."
