A George III cup and cover by William Holmes, London 1787. In full Adam style, with fluted sides and cover, vitruvian scroll borders and bud finial. One side is engraved with an unidentified coat of arms in an applied wreath cartouche and the other has an applied cast plaque showing putti in a Bacchic procession between two temples. 16 1high; weight about 60 ounces. Evidently cups like this were always mostly ceremonial and decorative in nature, although the form derives from two handled drinking cups that would have been passed hand-to-hand at regimental banquets and similar formal affairs. The form has remained popular for prizes and trophies. This is a beautiful example of refined style and fine quality, in excellent condition..
